Abstract
Objective£ºThe purpose of this study was to provide a preliminary data for developing effective management system of alcohol misuse people by analyzing drinking behaviors, health status and mental health service utilization of heavy drinker visiting emergency center of public hospitals. Methods: Questionnaires was done from the 154 heavy drinkers visiting emergency center of public hospitals in Seoul from May to November in 2012. We did correlation analysis between drinking behaviors, health status, mental health service perception and service utilization. Results: 69.2% of the participants could be categorized by alcohol use disorder. Most of the participants was needed to intensive intervention for alcohol misuse. Higher risk level of drinking has correlation with lower level of health status. Mental health service perception is positively related to service needs for mental health, education level and health care status. Conclusion : Even though most of heavy drinkers visiting emergency centers were alcohol use disorder group and had severe physical and/or mental health problems, their needs for mental health services was very low. Therefore, we should try to develop ER-based awareness increasing programs and proper interventions for alcohol misuse.
